Local and experiential Indigenous knowledge and community-led science to monitor the Hay Zama bison herd.
Members of the Dene Tha’ First Nation conducted roadside surveys of wood bison in and around the Hay Zama head range from Fall 2020 to Spring 2021. Information from the field surveys – including cultural, environmental, geographical and bison data – was collected in a community-developed app and database.
The purpose of this community-led monitoring and data collection project was to integrate Indigenous knowledge with western scientific approaches to support greater understanding of wood bison and habitat needs for better management in Northwestern Alberta.
